After running the compression test on my Honda Pilot and determining that I had a significant loss of compression in cylinder 6, I went out and purchased a Leak Down tester to zero in on what has actually happened to the engine when the timing belt broke. The leak down tester was a bit more difficult to purchase locally than I had initially thought. I was able to pick one up at a local NAPA Auto Parts for $130 Canadian. Overall I’m very happy with the quality and ease of use of the NAPA leak down tester and would recommend anyone looking for a leak down tester consider the one from NAPA. The leak down test, like the compression test, was easy to run and results were clear.
Cylinders 1-5 had fairly significant air leakage, with obvious air loss from the oil filler cap. This indicates that my piston rings are generally worn. This is not surprising as the 3.5 Liter Honda engine has over 200k Miles (320k km) on it. Cylinder 6 on the other hand had a 100% air loss and rather than coming from the oil cap, was actually leaking from the air intake. This would indicate that I have most likely bent my intake valves.
I will have to remove the engine cylinder head to get a better look at cylinders 4, 5, and 6.
