Installing Tubeless Bike Tires

Putting new tires on your bike should be a reasonably easy task, these Schwalbe tires are examples of very difficult tires to mount on a rim. This may be because the Stan’s rims are 1mm larger than the Schwalbe tires. I have contacted Schwalbe about this but they have thus far given fairly unsatisfactory answers. Here is the step by step sequence on how I mount up my tubeless tires on my bike. Though I mount Bontrager tires rather than the new Schwalbe tires that I had planned to mount.

My Key Take Aways

The first step is to deflate your old tire and remove it from the rim
You may need to put on rim tape for tubeless setups, if that is already on your rim, simply work one side of the new tire on the rim. Note the direction of rotation of the tire
The second side will be more difficult to get on the rim, but still should be manageable by hand
Rub the rim and tire sidewall on each side with a soap and water mix
An air compressor is highly recommended, I use a high pressure initially, but am careful not to overinflate the tire
Inflate the tire with the compressor, typically there will be an audible sound when the tire seats properly on the rim
Take a detailed look at how the tire is sitting on the rim, ensure that there isn't a high spot or low spot. If it appears non-symetrical, consider deflating, and reinflating
Remove the valve stem and deflate the tire. The tire should remain on the rim
Generally I use 4 Oz of tire sealant for a 29 inch rim, 3 Oz is also likely acceptable. Inject the sealant into the valve
Install the valve back into the valve stem
Pump your tire up to your prefered tire pressure, any pump should work
Spin your wheel on multiple axis' to ensure that it flows all over the interior of the rim and tire, sealing any leaks
Put your tires on and go out for a rip on your bike to test them out
