ROOF VENT INSTALLATION

Roof vents are critically important in allowing air movement in your attic space. In the summer they let the hot air out of the space, and in the winter they allow moist air to escape out of the attic space as well. In my case there was not venting in one area of my roof which created a situation where the attic area got very hot. Addin the roof vent immediately improved the situation.

I found it helpful to look at where I wanted the vent from both the top and bottom of the roof. In this case I am opening an old vent back up
You could drive a nail up from the bottom but I just drilled through the roof
Always exercise safety when working on a roof
Doing an initial rough fit of the vent before installing
Initial area opened up to visualize where the vent is going
Shingles to accomodate the vent. Note that the wings of the vent go under the shigles, it is important not to cut the shingles too wide
I need to grind out the aluminum plate, this is not the case for most people though
I am cutting out two rows of shingles but the type and size of vent will dictate the ammount you need to cut out
Size up the hole that you will cut through the roof. It could be a circle or a square depending on your vent
The hole should be sized to the vent to allow the correct air flow
I am cutting with a jig saw, but many things will work
Don't damage the roof truss
Consider a pry bar so as not to damage the truss if you have to go over top of one
Use the pry bar to look for nails in the way of the vent. All nails that the vent will hit must be temporarily removed
I put tar under the vent on three sides (not the bottom), and then slid it under the shingles and into place
Fully seat the vent into position
Screws are probably the best option, but I am just using nails for the bottom. I used three
I sealed all nails with black knight roof repair
Nails were put back into place in the general vacinity of where they were removed.
Nails were then sealed, and all the places where the tar seal on the shingle was broken got a dab of roofing tar (black knight) so that they wouln't lift in the wind in the future
Gloves would be a good idea when working with tar. The edges were all sealed up keeping in mind the need to conserve drainage
Once done I sprayed it with water to see where the water would flow and ensure that the water didn't get hung up in anyway
