RAIN GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS

Some areas of the roof can get away with not having a gutter and downspout. This was not one of them. When raining a waterfall would form on this area of my roof and put a lot of water around the foundation. The fix was fairly inexpensive and fairly easy.

Although a small section of roof, this portion gets a significant amount of water flowing over it
Can't find downspouts and gutters to match the rest of your house? Paint them
I have found that tremclad professional is a good paint for the downspouts and gutters
This is the easy part of the project
You can get a metal cutting wheel for your mitre saw. It works well
There are left and right sides on the gutter and the end caps are not the same for each side. Make sure you get the right ones
Euramax has been a good gutter sealant for me
You also need some sheet metal screws to hold everything together
Before installing the ends add a squirt of sealant
Put the end on and screw it in place
Add a little bit more sealant to the inside and smooth it off with a gloved finger
I used a dremel to cut out for the downspout
The downspout looks like that once in place
Add sealant to the downspout outlet
Screw the outlet in place
Smooth out the sealant
Here is what the downspout outlet looks like installed
I found it easier to build most of the downspout on the ground
No additional sealant was used, all the downspouts slide together and get a couple screws to hold them together
I also attached the hidden hangers to the rain gutters while on the ground, and they will screw into the facia
I end up using hidden hangers
Here is the whole thing before I attach it to my house
I use a climbing harness, a rope and fall protection when installing this
You can see by the roof lines that a lot of water is pushed towards this small section of roof
Here is everything screwed in.
Once the hidden hangers are attached I keep building the downspouts toward the next roof
I switch to black on the bottom to blend into the shingles
I run the downspout right into the next rain gutter to avoid shingle wear from excess water flow in this section
I installed this small gutter dead level as the discharge is in the centre and the section of gutter is very small. For a long run a slight slope should be considered
