POOL FILTER REPLACEMENT

With damage to the internal components of my sand filter there is simply no way for it to filter effectively. Rather than just changing the internals and the multi-port valve I decided to change out everything.

Pool not filtering well or at all? The filter may be the problem. Open everything up and see what is going on
In my case the internal plastic pipes had all collapsed
Make sure you buy some new sand for the filter. Buy the amount that your filter reservoir indicates that it requires
Everything can be purchased in one kit which is likely the easiest way to ensure it all works together. Don't toss out the cardboard on the reservoir, it is used for adding sand and holding your centre pipe in the right position
You should have new O-Rings and clamps in the box
You should also have a new multiport valve for your reservoir
A new base is needed to ensure that it fits with your reservoir
Use a shop vac to get the old sand out of the filter
Once the sand is removed the reservoir is fairly light and easy to move
Make sure that you properly level the base that the filter will sit on
Drop the base on the pad
Position the reservoir so that the drain is in a position that you can reach
Install the laterals and centre pipe
Add some water before adding sand. This is done so the sand doesn't damage the laterals, but is rather slowed down when it hits the water
Put the fancy cardboard back in to correctly position the centre pipe
Start adding sand into the system, and keep adding until all the sand is in the reservoir
Place the clamp for the multiport valve on the reservoir
Install the Multiport valve O-Ring
Add some O-Ring lubricant
Carfully install the Multiport valve in the position that you want it
Recommed you install some of the send and return lines to get the Multiport valve exactly where you wanted it before clamping
Tighten the clamp to hold the multiport valve in place
Install the pressure gauge. Use the nut on the gauge, don't just twist by hand
Install the discharge extension
Cut and measure any additional hose that is needed. Only use this flexible hose on return lines. It is not good for the suction lines
Backwash the sand for 2 minutes before filtering back to your pool
Rinse for one minute after the back wash
You may need more connectors since every pool set up is different. Buy what you need before starting
Measure the final hoses and hook up
Start your pump and see if everything works
Teflon tape is your friend. Use a lot, and when in doubt use even more
This should get your pool looking crystal clear in no time
