Pool Sand Filter Backwash

Every week it is important to backwash the sand filter for your pool. This keeps excessive amounts of contamination out of the filter medium, and also helps to reduce the pressure in the system by loosening up and resetting the sand within the filter. This is a pretty easy job overall and will help to keep your equipment running well.

My Key Take Aways

Backwash weekly or if pressure increases by 10 psi over baseline
Install your backwash hose on the waste port and secure
Turn off pump before adjusting multi port settings
Turn multiport valve to "Backwash" turning clockwise
Turn the pump on. Your system will now run the water backwards through your filter medium and discharge out the waste port
All the pump to discharge water for about 1 minute, or until the water is running out clean
Turn pump off
Turn multi port valve to the "Rinse" setting
Turn pump back on to rest the sand filter medium
Run the Rinse for at least 30 seconds to rest the sand and prevent sand dust from getting in your pool
Turn pump off one more time
Finally, turn the multi port back to the "Filter" position
Turn the pump back on the the last time
Check to ensure that your pump is functioning properly
Check your pressure to verify it has been lowered
