EXTERIOR DOOR INSTALATION

Getting a new exterior door installed isn’t an overly difficult job. If you have floor damage it could be somewhat problematic. It is recommended that you consider doing this job with more than one person as it is difficult to shim the door by yourself.

Use a utility knife to cut seal of trim and paint to prevent damaging wall paint
Pry off the interior trim
Measure the door size and rough opening
Also note if it is a Right or Left hand opening door and if it is inward or outward swing
Use a hammer and nail to pop out the hinges
A saw-s-all and metal cutting blade can be used to cut the screws
smashy smashy
Remove the hinge screw rather than trying to cut them
Rip out the bottom plate
You may or may not need to cut some floor
It is a good time to insulate the floor if you had to do floor work
Its a good idea to have some plywood on hand to do floor repair
Dry fit your door before going to final steps
Do some final waterproofing before dropping in the door
You may need a door trim extender
Add at least three generous lines of silicone or appropraite caulk
Put the door into position
Adding small pieces of wood will prevent the door from falling through the opening
It is recommended to screw in the bottom corners, then the top corners, then the hinge side, then the final side. Have shims on hand
There should be one open spot for a long screw to go into, they are for security
Use only door and window spray foam
Fill the gaps with the spray foam
Add your door hardware while the foam is setting up
Excessive foam can be cut off with a serated bread knif
Have some more silicone on hand for the exterior
Add the exterior brick mold
Plastic wood is a good sandable, paintable product for filling screw holes
Fill holes, sand, and get ready to paint. Interior trim may also need to go back up
