UTILITY ROOM BUILD

If you are redoing large portions of your basement you may find yourself in a position that requires rebuilding your utility room. This process is actually pretty simple and can be completed in a day or two if you have the material on hand. In my video I overcome most of the major challenges that you might face in doing this type of project.

Get the prep work done such as insulation and dry wall
Determine if any electrical or ducting needs to move
You may need to do floor prep. In my case vinyl tile had to move
Ducting is usually held in place with foil tape and self taping screws
Use the correct tape to seal the seams in the ducts
I like to mark where the wall will go on the floor
I use treated 2x4 bottom plates and seal the cut ends
Cut your top and bottom plates
individually measures studs, they might not all be the same length based on your floor to ceiling spacing across the width of your home
Measure 16 inch stud spacing
Mark the 16 inch spacing across the bottom and top plates so you can line them up with the studs faster
Position all the studs as the will be on the wall
I use a srew to pull the wall in tight
I then add 2 nails into each end of the studs as nails are generally stronger and resist sheering better than screws
Stand the wall up into position
Have a hammer on hand to tap the wall into place
Check for plumb and level as required
I'm using a Ram Set to secure the bottom plate, but there are other options such as concrete screws
I'm securing the double top plate to the floor joist with 4 inch structural screws
voila
You may need to add a device box for a light switch
The second wall is build like the first and also gets screwed into the first wall for increased strength
Check local electrical codes where you live. You may need a switch and not a pull string for your utility room light.
Hang some drywall and do some painting if that's what you want in your utility room
You might need to clean your floor
You might need to paint your floor. Use a paint that can go on your surface and is made for floor purposes
Revel in a job well done
