ski and snowboard rack

After months of tripping over the skis and snowboards it’s time to get them in racks. These are quick easy projects and can tidy up a utility garage. I recommend the 45 degree slot over a straight slid in as this will better protect the camber of the ski and snowboards and will prevent them from falling out easily.

my key take aways

Rip the plywood to desired width, I am cutting it 1 foot wide
Cut rack to desired height, I am making 30 and 18 inch high racks
I am using a speed square at 45 degrees to mark my ski slots
I am using an appropriately sized spade bit to drill the back end of the slot. Note that both sides of the rack a held together with bar clamps
I'm using a jig saw to follow the lines that I scribed and terminate at the hole that was drilled
Optional step: clean the cuts with a router
Keep making slots to rack all your things. For the snowboards I made 1 inch wide slots, but for the skis I made them 2 inches wide
I'm cutting rack supports to stiffen the plywood and give something to screw them to the wall brackets with. They are the same height as the ply wood. 30 inches and 18 inches in my case
Screw the supports to the plywood rack
With the supports screwed on
I am cutting 54 inch wall brackets to allow me to srew the rack into 3 wall studs in the garage. Your width will be different
Before screwing in the wall bracket I dry fit the skis and snowboards so I get the distance between the supports at the correct width
Screw the wall brackets onto the supports
Completed ski rack. Snowboard rack is similar, but I used 3 wall brackets as it is larger
Screw rack into the wall studs. I am putting mine above the garage door
Ensure the garage door still opens, here is the rack with skis in it
Here are the snowboards in the rack. Note that the slots are wider apart where the boards are binding to binding, and closer when they are base to base
