SCHLUTER DITRA

In my very slow quest to update my bathroom I am laying down Schluter Ditra Uncoupling membrane on top of the existing 3/4 inch OSB. Overall a technically easy process, but definately one that has several steps to it.

Prep work is critical, fully remove all remnants of the old floor including any nails and staples, sand high spots if required
Run a vacume over the floor to clean any loose dirt and debris
Use a utility knife to cut the width of the Ditra to the room and cut around obstacles
Once the ditra is in place it is easy to cut out the vents
It would be better to do the whole floor at once but unfortunately I have to work in stages
Dry fit all the ditra and ensure mark where the joints are located
Use a sponge and water to wipe down the floor to get all the fine dust off the floor
Where some type of dust mask to prevent breathing the concrete dust
Mixing the schluter product is a two stage mixing process
The trowels from schluter are a weird size. I assume that is so they can sell you their own trowels
Trowel on the morter and rake it with the ridge side to add ridges
Carefully lay the layers of Ditra onto the morter
Use a float to ensure the Ditra is embedded in the mortar
I used a piece of ply wood to spread my weight out a bit to prevent indentations in the Ditra
Laydown the next piece and use the float. Consider removing doors as it is a pain to get the Ditra under them once the mortar is layed out
Just keep on adding mortar and Ditra until you are done
Allow the Ditra and mortar to fully set, and start with the Kerdi water proofing
Do the Kerdi corners first
Once the corners are in, overlap the corners with the Kerdi Strips
Embed the Kerdi strips in the mortar
After the corners and edges are done seal the centers
