RIM JOIST INSULATION

Having well insulated rim joists with proper vapour barrier will greatly improve your homes efficiency. Overall the job is very easy, but can be time consuming depending on how many rim joists are in your home. Check on local building code requirements in your area as there will be several differences depending on the climate where you live.

Remove all the old insulation and vapour barrier and shop vac each rim joist
Spray foam was used to seal the edges of the rim joist at the wall
The spray foam needs 15-30 minutes to set up before insualtion can be added
Measure your rim joist area and cut insulation to fit. The type of insulation may be dictated by local building code. I am using Rockwool
I might help to cut the back of the insulation so it fits tighter against the rim joist
Insert the insulation and ensure it has a tight fit without air gaps
That is one layer of insulation installed
I used to layers of insulation so that the rim joist is in the same plane as the wall for a continuous layer of insulation
Acustic sealer will help prevent air movement
Trimming the corners of the vapour barrier will help with fitment
Install the vapour barrier. This is 6mm vapour barrier. Your local building codes may require something else
Staple through the vapour barrier and into the acoustic sealant
Old insulation vs new insulation
Head on view, plastic can be trimmed at bottom to clean it up
The rim joist plastic should be taped onto the wall vapour barrier for a continuous seal. In this case I will have to remove the dry wall
