ENTRYWAY CLOSET BUILD

The entryway closet is one of the first things that people will see when they enter ou house. In order to achieve that initial positive impression to potential home buyers, a decent looking closet will greatly benefit your homes sale. I find that Maple and Oak plywood is very well suited to building nice shelving. Although somewhat expensive, the quality of the final product will certainly be enhanced with the higher grade of sheet goods.

MY KEY TAKE AWAYS

Consider fixing drywal damage and painting first
Measure all the relevant distances and write them down
Cut rear support to the correct length
Periodically dry-fit your work to ensure it all fits well
Cut the shelf top, many stores can also do the major cuts for you
Cut your side supports
Dry-fit the whole thing to ensure its cut right
Sanding is everything, start with a rough grit (120) and work up to a fine grit
Before staining the good wood run some tests
Use a stud finder to identify your attachment points
Attach the supports to the wall
Use wood filler to hide nail hole and do a final sand once it is dry
Use a wood conditioner before staining for a more uniform stain
After conditioning, apply your stain
Wipe off excessive stain, and repeat processes to achieve desired stain colour.
A polyurethane coat will give your work a shine and protect the finish
Apply polyurethane, sand with fine grit sandpaper and reapply. Repeat until desired finish is achieved
Stain and clear coat the remaining closet pieces
You can use concealed brackets to attach the top to the supports
A front support will prevent a sagging front side
There are a few options to cover the plywood edge. I used a full board
Screws, glue and brackets can be used to secure the front side
Add bar and some lighting and you are good to use your closet
